GARY BENNETT

Gary Bennett enjoyed a professional career that exceeded 20 years. He joined Manchester City upon leaving school but it was with Cardiff City that he began to make a mark in the professional game.

A first team regular whilst still a teenager, his physical prowess and pace brought the attention of clubs in England’s top flight. One such club was Sunderland AFC and it was in the summer of 1984 that Gary headed to Roker Park to join the Black Cats.

His career was to blossom in the North East as he went on to make more than 440 appearances, captaining the side throughout until he left Sunderland AFC in 1995. His time at the club earned him legendary status with the clubs’ supporters, a testimonial with the club, and his appearances have him in the elite list of top 10 appearances ever for Sunderland AFC.

He continued his career at Carlisle United and Scarborough before joining Darlington. A move that would allow him to become player-manager and then manager in his own right.
